Product compliance is something that should be on your agenda primarily because you are a consumer yourself. Look around you. Whether you are at home or in the office. The clothes you wear, the computer you use, the toys your children play with. Most likely all these products follow the same route to market as the products handled via your company. Compliance legislation serves only one purpose: to protect the health of you, the user of the product, you the consumer, you, your own customer. The responsibility for compliance lies with the importer and / or brand owner. Under the new legislative framework (per 1/1/2010) a brand owner is seen as the manufacturer, so are you one? The producer of course has the evidence of the compliance. In order to be sure that shipped goods are compliant, are identical to those originally type tested, one must be able to verify the quality. You can only verify if you have sufficient detailed information about the items produced. A certificate or a cover page of a test report is not sufficient anymore. In order to verify you must have test reports, BOM lists, critical component lists and so on and so on. The basis for product compliance is risk assessment. Risk assessment is about asking questions. What will happen when … ? How to prevent that … ? Can we ensure that … ? Not everybody has that skill. However it requires a far more generic knowledge to look at presented questions and to confirm whether or not the aspects presented are relevant for the related product.
