During the 15-17 February 2010 ICPHSO conference in Washington DC, the following layout was presented by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as a possible standardized international layout for all recall notices. Location: top right-hand corner on page 3 of major daily newspapers.
The 500+ present authorities, manufacturers, retailers and trading companies also discussed that texts in recall notices should be more clear, a picture of the product should be included, the text font size should be no less than 11pt., and a clear description of the hazard and potential injury should be included.
Finally, the required action from the consumer shall be more clearly mentioned; today the number of returned products, even in serious cases, is low, leaving many dangerous products in the market. A low return may save the manufacturer or importer money in the short term, but may expose in the long term the manufacturer or importer to continuing risk of accidents.
