The aesthetics or performance of products may require properties such as "anti-scratch".
Anti-scratch additives are used when the surface of moulded plastics components must be both soft and scratch- resistant and also hard or tough enough to resist any damage to the surface from everyday use.
A few examples of consumer products having plastic parts that may benefit from anti-scratch additives are personal electronic devices (mobile phones, lap tops, consoles), garden furniture and visible automobile parts.

Polymers such as polypropylene are by nature soft and do not have the desired anti-scratch properties.
Anti-scratch properties can be obtained by compounding polymers with certain chemicals such as mica, talc or silicon oil. But it is an area where innovation takes place and many solutions are provided.
